Indian Cricket Loses Dream11 Sponsorship After Online Gaming Ban
Indian cricket is now searching for a new main sponsor after Dream11, the country’s largest fantasy sports platform, withdrew from a $43.6 million sponsorship deal following a government ban on online gambling.
Dream11 had become the lead sponsor for both the men’s and women’s national teams in July 2023, with its logo displayed on player jerseys. The platform also sponsors several Indian Premier League (IPL) franchises.
Government Crackdown on Online Gaming
Last week, the Indian Parliament passed the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill, making the offering and financing of online gaming platforms illegal. Offenders now face up to five years in prison.
Following the legislation, Dream11 informed the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) that it could no longer continue its sponsorship, affecting the upcoming Asia Cup, which starts on September 9 in the UAE. A BCCI official confirmed that the board will launch a new tender for sponsorship soon.
Impact on Fantasy Sports
The ban affects platforms offering card games, poker, and fantasy sports, including India’s popular fantasy cricket apps. The government cited concerns over financial distress, addiction, fraud, money laundering, and links to terrorism financing as reasons for the crackdown.
Dream11 also sponsors the Caribbean Premier League and Australia’s Big Bash League, highlighting its global presence in the fantasy sports industry.
Looking Ahead
With the Asia Cup approaching, the BCCI is exploring new sponsorship options to ensure the teams are fully backed for the tournament.
