Kim Jong Un supervises new missile tests as North Korea boasts advances with ‘unique technology

Kim Jong Un Oversees Test of New Air Defense Missiles Amid Regional Tensions

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un personally supervised the launch of two new types of air defense missiles, according to state media reports on Sunday. The move comes as South Korea and the United States conduct joint military exercises in the region.

The Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) stated that Saturday’s test demonstrated the missiles’ effectiveness against aerial threats, including drones and cruise missiles. Officials described the technology as “advanced” and highlighted its “strong combat capability.” However, no details were given about the exact missile models or the testing location.

During the inspection, Kim reportedly assigned new responsibilities to his military research teams, ahead of a major political conference scheduled for early next year. Notably, the report did not mention any direct remarks toward Washington or Seoul.

The timing of the test coincided with South Korean President Lee Jae Myung’s visit to Tokyo, where he met Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba. The two leaders pledged closer cooperation, including stronger trilateral ties with the United States, to address regional security challenges. Following the Tokyo summit, President Lee is expected to travel to Washington for further discussions.

North Korea has resisted calls to resume talks on reducing its weapons program, instead seeking closer ties with countries challenging U.S. influence. Analysts say this includes cooperation with Russia, particularly in the areas of air defense and radar systems.

Reports from Seoul suggest North Korea has provided support to Russia since the Ukraine conflict began, with assessments indicating around 15,000 North Korean personnel have been deployed to assist. Some sources also claim discussions are underway for additional workers to be sent to Russia’s Kursk region.

Meanwhile, Kim recently held a ceremony in Pyongyang to honor personnel who served abroad, awarding medals and praising them as “heroes of the nation.”
