Two arms smugglers arrested after encounter with police

Amritsar – Police successfully dismantled an alleged smuggling operation involving illegal firearms with the arrest of two individuals following a brief encounter near village Bhusse in the Sarai Amanat Khan area early Tuesday morning, according to Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Abhimanyu Rana.

The individuals taken into custody have been identified as Sukhdev Singh, also known as Dev, a resident of Rattan Kalan in the Attari area of Amritsar Rural, and Swarn Singh, a resident of Konewala in Ramdass.

Law enforcement recovered two advanced firearms from the suspects’ possession—a 9mm Glock and a .30 calibre Px5 pistol—along with seven live cartridges and three spent shells.

SSP Rana stated that police teams acted promptly on a tip-off regarding two motorcycle-borne individuals reportedly moving suspiciously in the area. Officers from the Crime Investigation Agency (CIA) set up a checkpoint and attempted to intercept them near Bhusse village.

During the operation, one of the suspects allegedly opened fire. In response, police acted in self-defence. One of the suspects, Sukhdev Singh, sustained injuries and was promptly taken to a nearby medical facility for treatment.

According to initial investigations, the accused were allegedly in communication with smuggling networks based across the border. They are suspected of using drones to receive illegal consignments, including arms and ammunition, which were then distributed across various border districts.

Authorities are continuing their investigation to uncover the full extent of the operation and identify any additional individuals involved.
