Liverpool Eye Alexander Isak Amid Darwin Nunez Exit – Slot Hints at Further Transfers

August 8, 2025

Liverpool manager Arne Slot has refused to rule out a renewed move for Newcastle United’s star striker Alexander Isak, as the Premier League champions continue reshaping their squad ahead of the new season.

With Darwin Nunez nearing a high-profile £46 million transfer to Saudi Pro League giants Al Hilal, Slot remains open to strengthening his attacking options, despite already spending close to £300 million this summer.

🔁 Big Spending, Big Departures

Under Slot’s leadership, Liverpool have already made major moves in the transfer market:

  • Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike have bolstered the forward line.

  • Milos Kerkez and Jeremie Frimpong have added pace and versatility at full-back.

These acquisitions are part of a wider rebuild, with Nunez’s exit helping to balance the books. The Uruguayan striker is among several high-profile departures following Liverpool’s title-winning season.

💰 Isak Pursuit Still Alive?

Liverpool reportedly had a £110 million bid rejected for Alexander Isak, with Newcastle United said to be holding out for a British transfer record fee. The Swedish striker has been absent from Newcastle’s pre-season preparations and is currently training alone, adding fuel to speculation around his future.

When asked directly about the Isak links, Arne Slot offered a diplomatic response:

“You never talk about players that are not yours,” he said ahead of Liverpool’s Community Shield clash with Crystal Palace at Wembley.

However, Slot also acknowledged that the club is always alert to new opportunities:

“I think we already have a lot of attacking power – Cody Gakpo, Federico Chiesa, Hugo Ekitike, Mo Salah, Jeremie Frimpong, Florian Wirtz… But as always, we are looking at the chances in the market.”

🕯️ Honouring Diogo Jota: A Season of Tribute

Liverpool’s preparations have also been marked by heartbreak, following the tragic death of Portuguese international Diogo Jota, who lost his life in a car accident alongside his brother in northern Spain.

Slot spoke emotionally about the club’s continued grief:

“It’s impacted us deeply – though, of course, it’s impacted his wife, children, and family most. The tributes we’ve seen in Preston, in Asia – they’ve all been very emotional and very powerful.”

As part of the club’s ongoing tribute:

  • A “Forever 20” emblem, referencing Jota’s shirt number, will feature on Liverpool shirts throughout the season.

  • A permanent memorial will be installed at Anfield to honour his memory.

What’s Next?

Liverpool now shift focus to Sunday’s Community Shield – the traditional curtain-raiser for the English football season – where they face Crystal Palace at Wembley Stadium.

As the Reds prepare to defend their league crown, fans can expect both exciting new signings and heartfelt moments in tribute to one of their fallen stars.
