Flood Alert in Punjab: Taunsa Barrage Sees Critical Water Flow, Authorities Launch Rescue Operations
Lahore, Pakistan: The Taunsa Barrage on the Indus River is facing a critical flood situation as water flow reaches 500,000 cusecs and is expected to rise further, prompting a high alert across Punjab.
The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has directed immediate evacuation of citizens living near riverbeds and launched emergency rescue operations. Officials from Dera Ghazi Khan, Bahawalpur, Layyah, Kot Addu, Muzaffargarh, Rahim Yar Khan, and Rajanpur have been put on high alert to coordinate relief efforts.

Local Impact and Response
In Mianwali, floodwater is rising at medium-level flood conditions, affecting villages in tehsils Mianwali, Piplan, and Isakhel. Hundreds of residents and livestock were previously evacuated, and flood relief camps are now operational to support affected communities.
Deputy Commissioner Khalid Javed Goraya and district officials are conducting daily inspections and directing staff to stay alert. Rescue 1122 teams have rescued 81 people in the past two days using 18 boats.
In Toba Tek Singh and Jhang, authorities are monitoring low-lying areas near the Chenab River, ensuring medicines, food, and evacuation transport are ready for residents. Residents have been advised to stay informed about rising water levels.
In Okara, minor flooding at Head Sulemanki in the Sutlej River has been reported. Authorities have ensured safe relocation, food, and fodder arrangements. No serious threat to human life has been reported, although crops may be affected.
