PM Shehbaz Sharif Condemns Killing of Pakistani Nationals in Iran, Urges Joint Regional Efforts Against Terrorism
ISLAMABAD – Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has expressed profound sorrow over the tragic killing of eight Pakistani nationals in Mehrestan, a district in Iran’s Sistan-Baluchestan province.
In an official statement issued on Sunday, the Prime Minister conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased and emphasized the need for a united regional approach to counter terrorism. He described the incident as deeply concerning and called it a reminder of the ongoing threat posed by terrorism across the region.
Sharif urged the Iranian authorities to swiftly apprehend those responsible and ensure justice is served. He also requested that the reasons behind this act of violence be shared with the public. The Prime Minister directed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to remain in close contact with the victims’ families and coordinate with Pakistan’s embassy in Iran for the timely repatriation of the deceased.
The Foreign Office also strongly condemned the incident, labeling it a “cowardly and inhumane act.” In a statement, the Foreign Office spokesperson expressed hope for full cooperation from Iranian officials in investigating the matter and ensuring the prompt return of the victims’ remains.
“Eight Pakistani nationals were tragically killed in Mehrestan, located about 230 kilometers from the Pakistan-Iran border,” the spokesperson said. “Our diplomatic mission has requested consular access to verify the victims’ identities and is working closely with Iranian authorities to ensure a thorough investigation.”
On instructions from the Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Pakistan’s Embassy in Tehran and Consulate in Zahidan are actively engaging with Iranian officials to facilitate justice and support the families of the victims.
Pakistan’s Ambassador to Iran, Muhammad Mudassir Tipu, also condemned the attack in a social media post, calling it a “despicable act of violence.” He assured that Pakistani officials are working with Iranian counterparts to ensure a swift investigation and bring the perpetrators to justice.
“The mortal remains will be repatriated to Pakistan as soon as possible,” the ambassador said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the victims. May the departed souls rest in eternal peace.”
