Richie Mo’unga to Return to New Zealand Rugby with 18-Month Deal — Eligible for All Blacks in 2026

Richie Mo’unga, one of New Zealand’s most accomplished rugby stars, is set to return home after signing an 18-month contract with New Zealand Rugby (NZR). The agreement will make him eligible to play for the All Blacks from October 2026, marking a significant step in his professional journey.

🏉 A Comeback to Remember

Mo’unga’s return includes commitments to:

  • Canterbury for the 2026 and 2027 NPC seasons, and

  • The Crusaders for the 2027 Super Rugby Pacific campaign.

This return will reintroduce his world-class skills to the domestic stage, where he previously won seven Super Rugby titles with the Crusaders and earned 56 test caps with the All Blacks.

🌍 Ready for the International Stage Again

Mo’unga has been playing rugby in Japan and, due to NZR’s local eligibility rules, was previously not available for national selection. However, with his return scheduled, he will once again be eligible to represent New Zealand just in time for potential 2027 Rugby World Cup selection.

NZR officials have expressed their excitement. CEO Mark Robinson said,

“Richie is a proven match-winner and a leader on and off the field. His return is a big boost for New Zealand Rugby.”

🔍 Limited Window for All Blacks Selection

Though Mo’unga will become eligible in October 2026, his late return means he might miss early-season test matches, including New Zealand’s historic tour to South Africa. Still, his re-entry could be crucial for final team selections heading into the World Cup.

🎯 A Positive Move for Rugby Fans

Richie Mo’unga’s homecoming is exciting news for fans of New Zealand rugby. His leadership, experience, and game-changing play style will not only benefit the Crusaders and Canterbury, but also provide the All Blacks with a powerful option as they look ahead to future championships.

Stay tuned for more updates on Mo’unga’s return and the 2027 Rugby World Cup journey.
