NDMA Issues Fresh Flood Warning for Ravi River and Surrounding Areas
ISLAMABAD – August 29, 2025 –
The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a fresh flood alert, warning that the Ravi River and its adjoining catchment areas may face severe flooding in the coming days.
According to NDMA officials, heavy rainfall is expected in the upper catchments of the Ravi between August 30 and September 3. In addition, the release of water from Thein Dam could further increase the river’s flow. Current data shows a discharge of 147,000 cusecs at Balloki, with a flood wave forecast to reach Sadhnai around September 2–3, potentially raising flows to 125,000–150,000 cusecs. Authorities cautioned that these levels could create a serious flood situation in Sadhnai.
Low-lying parts of Lahore and Raiwind are considered most at risk, while nearby districts including Kasur, Pattoki, Okara, Renala Khurd, and Depalpur have also been marked as vulnerable. Other areas feared to be impacted include Gogera, Tandlianwala, Kamalia, Pir Mahal, Adda Hakim, and Sadhnai.
Separately, the NDMA confirmed that the water flow at Chiniot Bridge has risen to 855,500 cusecs, creating a severe flood condition.
Meanwhile, authorities in Islamabad opened the spillways of Rawal Dam earlier today after persistent rainfall pushed water levels to the danger mark of 1,751 feet. The controlled release, supervised by the Assistant Commissioner of Nilore, was carried out to prevent overflow.
The NDMA has directed all departments to remain on high alert and to take preventive measures. Citizens are strongly advised to stay cautious, avoid crossing Korang Nullah or using temporary bridges during peak discharge hours, and cooperate with emergency teams to ensure public safety.
