New Zealand Dominate Day One of Second Test Against Zimbabwe
Published: August 8, 2025
New Zealand have taken a commanding lead in the second Test against Zimbabwe, wrapping up a dominant opening day with both ball and bat in complete control. After bowling out the hosts for just 125, the visitors responded with a confident 174-1, already building a 49-run lead with nine wickets still in hand.
Seamers Shine for the Kiwis
It was a dream day for New Zealand’s pace attack, with Matt Henry and rising star Zakary Foulkes wreaking havoc on a struggling Zimbabwe batting lineup. The experienced Henry stood out with a brilliant five-wicket haul, while Foulkes backed him up superbly with four wickets of his own.
Zimbabwe’s batters found little success at the crease. Veteran Brendan Taylor was the lone standout, showing some resistance with a gritty 44 off 107 balls, but even he couldn’t hold out for long against Henry’s relentless pace and accuracy. Promising starts from Sean Williams and Craig Ervine fizzled out quickly, leaving the hosts in trouble early on.
Conway and Young Lead the Charge
In response, New Zealand’s openers Devon Conway and Will Young put on a masterclass in controlled batting, stitching together a brilliant 162-run partnership. Their stand not only erased the deficit but pushed New Zealand into the lead with ease.
Young played fluently for his 74 from 101 deliveries, before being dismissed by Trevor Gwandu. Meanwhile, Conway remained unbeaten on 79, calmly steering the innings and eyeing yet another Test century on Day Two. He will be joined by nightwatchman Jacob Duffy, with an in-form Kiwi middle order — including Rachin Ravindra and Daryl Mitchell — ready to extend the advantage.
Tough Road Ahead for Zimbabwe
With New Zealand already in a strong position and plenty of batting firepower still to come, Zimbabwe face an uphill battle to get back into the game. The pitch has offered some assistance, but the visitors’ composed reply has quieted any questions about the conditions.
Zimbabwe captain Craig Ervine will be looking to bowlers like Blessing Muzarabani to produce something special on Day Two if the hosts are to keep their hopes alive.
