Northern Superchargers Cruise to Opening Win in The Hundred 2025

Published: August 8, 2025

Northern Superchargers kicked off their The Hundred 2025 campaign in style with a dominant victory over Welsh Fire at Headingley, thrilling a crowd of over 7,000 fans. The all-round performance from the Superchargers saw them secure a 47-run win, setting the tone early in the competition.

Clinical Performance Under New Leadership

Under the guidance of new head coach Lisa Keightley, the former England Women’s Head Coach, the Superchargers looked sharp from the start. Batting first, they posted a competitive 141-4, thanks to a strong top-order showing. Skipper Hollie Armitage anchored the innings with a calm and unbeaten 34, while Aussie imports Georgia Wareham (29) and Annabel Sutherland (28) also chipped in with valuable runs.

Welsh Fire, led by Tammy Beaumont, struggled to recover from early setbacks. Star batters Sophia Dunkley and Hayley Matthews fell cheaply, leaving the side under pressure with the scoreboard still in single digits.

Bowlers Seal the Deal

Chasing 142, Welsh Fire crumbled to just 94 all out, unable to build momentum against a disciplined bowling attack. The Superchargers’ spinners were especially impressive — Georgia Wareham and Linsey Smith picked up two wickets each, with Grace Ballinger also claiming a brace. Every bowler played their part in a performance that kept the pressure on from ball one.

Beaumont and Georgia Elwiss attempted a rescue mission with a brief stand, but the Superchargers’ balanced bowling unit kept chipping away, making sure the visitors never looked like getting close.

Wareham Shines as Match Hero

Australia’s Georgia Wareham was named Meerkat Match Hero for her impactful all-round display. Speaking after the match, she said:

“It felt like a really good hit out for the girls. We were clinical in all areas and it showed on the scoreboard. Batting with Hollie [Armitage] was calm and composed — we just focused on building a solid finish. With the ball, we aimed to keep the stumps in play and change the pace, and it worked really well.”

What’s Next?

Welsh Fire will look to bounce back quickly as they host their next match in Cardiff on Saturday. Meanwhile, the Superchargers will head to face Trent Rockets on Sunday, hoping to keep their winning momentum going.
