Nunes lifts Man City to thrilling win

MANCHESTER – Manchester City claimed a thrilling 2-1 victory over Aston Villa in the Premier League on Tuesday night, with Matheus Nunes scoring in stoppage time to keep the club’s hopes for a Champions League spot alive.

The game, played at the Etihad Stadium, appeared to be heading for a draw after Marcus Rashford equalized with a first-half penalty, cancelling out Bernardo Silva’s early goal. However, substitute Jeremy Doku delivered a precise cross in the 94th minute, which Nunes converted to seal a last-gasp win for City.

The result sees City climb to third place in the table with 61 points, though they have played one more match than several teams closely trailing behind. Villa, still searching for a breakthrough at the Etihad where they’ve now lost 15 consecutive matches, remain seventh with 57 points.

Guardiola Praises Team’s Fighting Spirit

Following the match, City manager Pep Guardiola praised his players’ determination and focus as the Premier League enters its decisive final stages.

β€œWe are not used to scoring such late winners, so I’m really happy with how the team stayed focused,” Guardiola told the media. β€œThere are just a few games left, and every point is critical in the race for Champions League qualification.”

First-Half Action Sets the Stage

City took the lead early in the seventh minute when Omar Marmoush burst down the flank and delivered a low cross to Silva, whose shot squeezed past Emi Martinez, despite the goalkeeper getting a hand to it.

Villa responded just over 10 minutes later. After a VAR review, a penalty was awarded for a foul by Ruben Dias on Jacob Ramsey. Rashford confidently converted, sending Stefan Ortega the wrong way.

Nunes Delivers in Crucial Moment

With City pushing for a winner, Matheus Nunes made his mark with his first league goal for the clubβ€”an effort that sparked jubilation among the home supporters and a visibly animated Guardiola on the touchline.

β€œThis was a tough game against a very strong side,” Nunes said in a post-match interview. β€œWe came here determined to win, and it couldn’t have been timed more perfectly.”

Key Stats and Missed Opportunities

City enjoyed 61.6% possession and registered 14 shots to Villa’s seven, reflecting their attacking dominance. Despite the pressure, several chances went begging in the second half. Kevin De Bruyne created a standout opportunity for James McAtee, who narrowly missed the target, while Nico O’Reilly also delivered a pinpoint pass that went unfinished.

Rashford, on loan from Manchester United, posed threats throughout and nearly gave Villa the lead with a powerful run, but his shot found the side netting.

Villa Remain Hopeful Despite Defeat

Villa head coach Unai Emery acknowledged City’s control but found positives in his team’s performance.

β€œOver the 90 minutes, City dominated more, but it was a competitive match,” Emery said. β€œWe need to stay focused and keep moving forward. Every game matters from here on.”

With just four matches remaining, Manchester City remains firmly in contention for a Champions League position, while Villa will aim to bounce back and maintain their European ambitions.
