Pakistan Likely to Import 300,000 Tons of Sugar from Azerbaijan

Pakistan Set to Import Up to 300,000 Tons of Sugar via G2G Deals

Pakistan is preparing to import as much as 300,000 tons of sugar through direct government-to-government (G2G) agreements.

According to official sources, talks are underway with Azerbaijan following recent high-level visits. While sugar will be imported, Pakistan is also expected to export certain commodities to Azerbaijan as part of the trade arrangement.

The Ministry of National Food Security has confirmed that a 200,000-ton sugar import deal has already been finalized, with the first shipment expected to arrive in early September. Some details, such as the exact cost and subsidy structure, are yet to be disclosed.

Officials say the decision was approved by a committee led by Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar. The Prime Minister’s Office stated that the measure aims to stabilize sugar prices in the domestic market and provide relief to consumers.

In recent developments, authorities reported action against sugar hoarding, with names of 18 mill owners placed on the Exit Control List. The Pakistan Sugar Mills Association, however, disputed claims of large-scale seizures.

Pakistan had earlier exported over 757,000 tons of sugar worth $406.9 million between August 2024 and January 2025 due to surplus stocks. However, climate-related crop challenges have now reduced output to around 5.8 million tons — below the estimated 6.3 million tons required for local consumption — prompting the shift toward imports.
