Pakistan to Import US Crude Oil for the First Time

Cnergyico to Import Pakistanโ€™s First US Crude Oil Cargo in October 2025

Cnergyico (PSX: CNERGY) is set to make history by importing Pakistanโ€™s first-ever crude oil shipment from the United States, according to a report by Reuters. The delivery is part of a term agreement with global energy trader Vitol.

๐Ÿšข Details of the Shipment

  • The cargo will consist of 1 million barrels of West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude oil

  • Loading will take place in Houston this month

  • The shipment is expected to arrive in Karachi during the second half of October 2025

If this initial delivery proves viable, monthly imports from the US could follow.

๐Ÿ“Š Strategic Shift in Energy Sourcing

This development follows a recent US-Pakistan trade agreement, under which a 19% tariff was imposed on certain Pakistani exports. In response, Pakistanโ€™s finance and petroleum ministries encouraged local refineries to diversify their sourcing and explore American crude options.

๐Ÿญ About Cnergyico

  • Cnergyico operates Pakistanโ€™s largest oil refinery, with a capacity of 156,000 barrels per day

  • It also manages the countryโ€™s only single-point mooring (SPM) terminal, located near Karachi, which allows the handling of large oil tankers

The company confirmed that US WTI crude is compatible with its existing infrastructure and does not require blending, making it a convenient and efficient choice.

๐Ÿ’ก Impact on Energy Sector

  • The move aims to reduce Pakistanโ€™s reliance on Middle Eastern oil suppliers, who currently account for a major share of the countryโ€™s $11.3 billion annual oil import bill

  • Cnergyico also plans to develop a second offshore terminal and implement long-term upgrades to its refining facilities

Currently, the refinery has been operating at 30โ€“35% capacity due to weaker domestic demand. However, the company expects higher utilization in the coming months as energy consumption gradually rebounds.

This milestone marks a new era in Pakistanโ€™s oil import strategy, reflecting broader efforts to diversify energy sources and strengthen trade partnerships.
