PMD Issues Heavy Rain Alert for Azad Kashmir and KP, Urges Public Caution

August 7, 2025

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued an alert for heavy rainfall across Azad Kashmir and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), urging residents to remain cautious and stay informed amid ongoing monsoon activity.

In an official update posted at 3:30 PM on X (formerly Twitter), the PMD warned that a rain-bearing weather system is forming over the Poonch, Bagh, Haveli, and Sudhnoti regions of Azad Kashmir. The system is expected to bring strong winds, thunderstorms, and intense downpours in the next few hours.

⚠️ Affected Areas

The following areas are likely to experience heavy rainfall and thunderstorms over the next 2–5 hours:

  • Azad Kashmir: Kotli, Rawalakot, Bhimber, Mirpur, Neelum Valley

  • Khyber Pakhtunkhwa: Muzaffarabad, Mansehra, Abbottabad, Haripur, Kohistan

  • Other Regions: Murree, Galyat, and surrounding hill stations

🛑 Public Safety Advisory

The PMD has urged citizens to:

  • Stay indoors during thunderstorms

  • Avoid traveling in vulnerable hilly or low-lying areas

  • Keep track of official weather updates

  • Take extra care near rivers, nullahs, and landslide-prone zones

🚨 Rising Casualty Toll

The monsoon season, which runs from June to September, is vital for water resources but also brings the risk of natural disasters.

According to the KP Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA):

  • 71 deaths have been reported in KP since late June

  • Over 50% of the victims were children

  • 86 people have sustained injuries in rain-related incidents

Nationwide, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) reported that the monsoon death toll rose to 299 as of last Sunday, up from 234.

🌧️ More Rain Expected

On Saturday, the PMD forecasted continued monsoon rains in the upper and central regions of the country throughout the week. Authorities have been instructed to prepare for potential urban flooding, especially in cities with poor drainage systems.
