PTA Warns Against Online Circulation of Illegal Content: Urges Digital Responsibility
Islamabad – The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has issued a strong public advisory, urging internet and social media users to avoid circulating or promoting illegal, immoral, or harmful content on digital platforms. The authority emphasized that while freedom of expression is a constitutionally protected right, its misuse will not be tolerated.
Freedom of Speech Has Legal Limits
PTA clarified that the right to freedom of speech does not extend to content that:
-
Disrespects religious sentiments or holy personalities
-
Engages in blasphemous acts
-
Incites hatred against individuals or state institutions, including the armed forces and national security agencies
Such content is considered a criminal offense under Pakistani law and is punishable under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) 2016.
Growing Concerns Over Fake News and Harmful Content
The authority raised concerns about the growing use of digital platforms to spread:
-
Fake news and misinformation
-
Sexually explicit or unethical material
-
False narratives disguised as activism
PTA stressed that promoting such content not only violates legal and moral boundaries but also undermines public order and social harmony.
“The rise in unethical and unlawful digital behavior poses a serious threat to our social fabric and national interests,” said a PTA spokesperson.
Legal Action Under PECA 2016
PTA reaffirmed its commitment to enforcing the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act, vowing to take strict legal action against individuals or groups involved in the dissemination of prohibited content.
The act outlines penalties for:
-
Blasphemy
-
Cyberbullying
-
Online harassment
-
Distribution of obscene material
-
Hate speech and defamation
Citizens Encouraged to Report Violations
To support its enforcement efforts, the PTA is encouraging citizens to report unlawful content through the PTA CMS mobile application. The authority called on the public to remain vigilant, responsible, and respectful while using online platforms.
Maintaining a Safe Digital Environment
PTA’s warning comes as part of a broader effort to maintain digital discipline, protect public morality, and safeguard national interests in an increasingly connected world.
Stay informed and help build a safe online community by reporting harmful content and using the internet responsibly.
