Karachi Sees Massive Turnout in Solidarity Marches for Gaza
KARACHI – Thousands of residents gathered on major roads in Karachi on Sunday to participate in solidarity rallies organized in support of the people of Gaza. The marches, held amid ongoing conflict in the region, were organized by two prominent religio-political parties—Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) and Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F).
The events, which took place on Sharea Faisal and Sharah-e-Quaideen, drew participants from all walks of life, including professionals such as doctors, lawyers, teachers, traders, and families with children. The demonstrations were peaceful and intended to highlight concern over the humanitarian crisis unfolding in Gaza.
According to official party statements, the rallies were held in response to the ongoing Israeli military operation in Gaza, which began after the October 7, 2023, attacks. The conflict has resulted in widespread devastation, with tens of thousands of casualties reported and significant damage to housing and healthcare infrastructure.
JI leader Hafiz Naeemur Rehman addressed the rally on Sharea Faisal, where he called on the Muslim world to unite in response to the humanitarian situation. He emphasized the importance of taking action—both symbolic and practical—to support those affected by the conflict.
“Karachi has once again stood up for the oppressed and shown it represents the voice of the Muslim world,” Naeem stated. He urged Pakistan’s leadership to spearhead global efforts aimed at supporting Gaza, encouraging collaboration among like-minded countries and individuals.
Naeem also encouraged continued public awareness campaigns and a nationwide boycott of products linked to Israeli companies. He announced a nationwide shutter-down strike on April 22 as a show of solidarity.
Visual displays at the rally included symbolic representations of affected civilians, multimedia screens, and banners expressing support for Gaza.
At a parallel event on Sharah-e-Quaideen, JUI-F leader Maulana Fazlur Rehman delivered a strong message of unity and resilience. “Our efforts to support Palestinians will not stop,” he said. “It is our moral and humanitarian duty to stand with the people of Gaza.”
Fazlur Rehman referenced Pakistan’s founding principles, reiterating the historic position taken by Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah regarding Palestine.
Both rallies featured large crowds waving Palestinian flags, carrying signs of solidarity, and chanting peaceful slogans. The events followed a series of similar demonstrations held across Pakistan in recent days, reflecting widespread public concern over the humanitarian toll of the ongoing conflict.
Authorities maintained order throughout the demonstrations, and the events concluded without incident.
