Karachi’s Green Line BRT Enters Second Phase, Promising Better Public Transport
Residents of Karachi are set to benefit from improved public transport as the second phase of the Green Line Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project is scheduled to begin in the second week of August.
The first phase of the project, which connects Surjani Town to Numaish, was completed in 2021. After a four-year interval, construction is now resuming with a focus on extending the service further into the city center.
What’s New in Phase Two?
The new extension will span 1.8 kilometers, linking Capri Cinema to Municipal Park in Saddar. The project will include:
-
Three new bus stations
-
Two dedicated traffic signals
This section is set to become an important part of Karachi’s growing BRT network, improving accessibility for thousands of daily commuters.
Investment and Budget
Tenders for this phase have already been awarded. An additional Rs. 5 billion has been allocated, bringing the total project cost to Rs. 30 billion so far.
The Federal Government had previously earmarked Rs. 42.7 billion for the Green Line BRT under the Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP) 2025–26.
Long-Term Impact
Once fully operational and linked with other public transport systems, the Green Line BRT is expected to:
-
Reduce travel time
-
Ease traffic congestion
-
Lower carbon emissions
This is a key step forward in creating a more efficient and sustainable transport system in Pakistan’s largest city.
