Trump says he will ‘very substantially’ raise tariffs on India in next 24 hours over Russian oil purchases

Trump Proposes Higher Tariffs on Indian Imports Over Russian Oil Trade

Washington, D.C. — Former U.S. President Donald Trump has indicated plans to substantially increase tariffs on Indian imports, citing New Delhi’s continued purchases of Russian oil as a key concern.

In a televised interview with CNBC, Trump criticized India’s trade relationship with the U.S., saying:

“India has not been a good trading partner. We do a lot of business with them, but they don’t reciprocate. I think I’m going to raise tariffs very substantially over the next 24 hours.”

While Trump had earlier announced a 25% tariff on Indian goods, he did not specify the new proposed rate, but suggested it could be significantly higher. The move is part of his broader economic strategy, particularly targeting countries that maintain trade with Russia amid the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

🇮🇳 India Responds: “Targeting Unjustified”

In response, India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) issued a detailed statement, defending its oil purchases from Russia. The MEA clarified that India began importing Russian oil in larger volumes only after traditional suppliers shifted exports to Europe, following the outbreak of the Ukraine conflict in 2022.

The MEA also pointed out that the U.S. and EU have themselves continued trading with Russia, citing American imports such as uranium for nuclear energy, palladium for electric vehicles, and fertilizers.

“Targeting India is unjustified and unreasonable,” the statement said. “Like any major economy, India will take all necessary measures to safeguard its national interests and economic security.”

🔍 Background: A Complex Trade Landscape

India is the world’s third-largest oil importer and currently the leading buyer of seaborne Russian crude — a key revenue source for Moscow.

Trump’s proposed tariff hike would exceed levies imposed on several other countries, including:

  • Vietnam (20%)

  • Indonesia (19%)

  • Japan & EU (15%)

Meanwhile, Trump has signaled a separate trade deal with Pakistan, India’s regional rival, that could include lower tariffs on Pakistani exports. This move has further complicated U.S.-India relations.

⚖️ Strained Relations Despite Past Cooperation

Though Trump and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi previously displayed close ties publicly, the current stance reflects growing tensions over trade, energy, and foreign policy priorities.

Recent reports suggest that the Indian government is consulting business leaders and policy stakeholders to determine its response, as domestic industries assess the potential impact of increased tariffs.

🌐 Looking Ahead

While it remains to be seen how the tariff proposal will unfold, both countries are expected to engage in diplomatic dialogue to manage economic and strategic differences. The development underscores the challenges of balancing energy security, international partnerships, and trade relations in today’s dynamic global environment.
