Wahab Riaz Misses Out on Pakistan Shaheens Coaching Role Amid PCB Decision Shuffle

In what seemed to be a promising step into coaching for former Pakistan pacer Wahab Riaz, the cricketer was unexpectedly passed over for the role of head coach for the Pakistan Shaheens’ upcoming England tour. This change highlights ongoing instability in the Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) decision-making process.

Initially, Wahab Riaz was the leading candidate for the position, with High Performance Director Aaqib Javed reportedly supporting his appointment. Known for his expertise in fast bowling and reverse swing—a skill he mastered during his playing days—Wahab was seen as an ideal mentor to nurture Pakistan’s emerging pace talents.

However, after news of Wahab’s potential appointment became public and social media reactions grew critical, Aaqib Javed withdrew his endorsement, citing concerns about the timing and public response. This sudden shift left Wahab sidelined. The PCB offered him a spot on the selection committee, which he declined, expressing a clear unwillingness to return to the role amid past internal politics and disagreements.

Sources reveal Wahab was particularly disappointed by what he saw as a breach of trust, as he had already started preparing for the coaching role based on a verbal commitment that was later reversed.

Ultimately, Imran Farhat has been appointed as the head coach for the Shaheens’ England tour, with Umar Gul continuing under contract and Rehan Riaz and Mohtashim Rasheed joining as bowling and fielding coaches respectively. Saud Shakeel will lead the squad as captain.

Though coaching roles within Pakistan cricket often see frequent changes, Wahab Riaz’s expertise and experience suggest that he could be a strong contender for future opportunities in the cricketing setup.
