Yankees’ Paul Goldschmidt Sidelined with Right Knee Sprain; IL Possible
August 14, 2025 –
New York Yankees first baseman Paul Goldschmidt is dealing with a low-grade right knee sprain, and the team may place the veteran slugger on the injured list (IL) ahead of their upcoming series in St. Louis.
Goldschmidt Injury Details
The injury occurred Tuesday while Goldschmidt chased a foul pop by Byron Buxton in the third inning. The first baseman overran the ball along the dirt near the Yankee dugout and slipped while making the catch on the grass, slightly impacting his right knee. Despite the mishap, Goldschmidt stayed in the game and hit a double in the seventh inning before being substituted.
“He was pretty sore last night and this morning,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said. “Feels like he’s doing quite a bit better right now, so we’ll see.” The team will continue to monitor him during their day off and make a decision before Friday’s game against the Cardinals.
Performance Highlights
Goldschmidt, a former NL MVP, is hitting .276 this season with 10 home runs and 40 RBIs in 112 games. He’s also maintained an impressive .996 fielding percentage at first base. Notably, he’s hitting .404 against left-handed pitching this year.
With Goldschmidt sidelined, Ben Rice made his 26th start at first base on Wednesday, and Cody Bellinger, who has extensive experience at the position, has made two starts this season. Bellinger praised Goldschmidt’s defensive contributions, saying, “He’s been a huge part of his team. He’s a vacuum over there… I’m really appreciative of what he does on the defensive side.”
The Yankees will continue evaluating Goldschmidt before deciding on an IL move, leaving fans anxious about his availability for the crucial upcoming series in St. Louis.
