Scorching Heat Meets Fierce Competition at Diamond Youth Baseball World Series in Lexington County
LEXINGTON COUNTY, S.C. β The Diamond Youth Baseball World Series officially kicked off on Friday, bringing excitement, competitionβand intense summer heatβto ballfields across Lexington County.
Young athletes from across the country are taking the field, determined to give their all, even as temperatures soar.
βοΈ Keeping Cool on the Diamond
With the sweltering heat in full force, families and coaches are going the extra mile to ensure the safety and comfort of the players. From misting fans to coolers stacked with ice-cold water, nearly every dugout and spectator area is equipped to combat the high temperatures.
βWeβre just pouring the water on them,β explained Tournament Director James Thompson. βFans in the dugouts, water coolers, and even personal team coolersβweβre doing everything we can to keep them cool.β
Thompson added that, if necessary, games can be rescheduled or delayed to prioritize player safety. Umpires also have the flexibility to extend time between innings and allow for extra water breaks when needed.
π§ Game Plan for the Heat
Despite the soaring temperatures, many of the players remain unfazed.
βA good portion of our kids work on farms, so theyβre used to the heat,β said Brandon Clewis, a proud parent supporting Team North Carolina.
Fans are also finding creative ways to beat the heat:
-
Handheld fans are a must-have item.
-
Cold drinks and wet towels are staples in the stands.
-
Parents and spectators are seen pulling back their hair and laughing off the sweat.
βYou pull back your hairβit doesnβt matter what it looks like, because youβre just gonna be dripping wet,β joked LouAnn Rudzienski, a loyal supporter.
βIt feels really great,β said Austin Willis from Waco, Texas, referring to his handheld fan. βIt makes me feel a lot better. If I didnβt have it, itβd be a lot hotter.β
π Safety Comes First
To ensure the well-being of all attendees, Lexington EMS is stationed on-site throughout the duration of the games, ready to respond if needed.
And when the games wrap for the day, many families have cool-off plans.
βWe have a lake nearby,β one spectator said. βWeβre gonna jump in the lakeβI want to jump in the lake!β
π Championship Games Scheduled for Wednesday
The tournament will continue through next Wednesday, when the championship games will determine this yearβs top teams. Until then, itβs all about teamwork, endurance, and staying cool under pressureβliterally.
