England Slips in Updated Test Championship Table After ICC Over-Rate Penalty

(Sports Correspondent: Imran Sohail)

England Penalized Despite Victory Over India in WTC Clash at Lord’s

England’s thrilling 22-run victory over India at Lord’s may have boosted team morale, but it came at a cost. The International Cricket Council (ICC) has penalized Ben Stokes’ side for a slow over rate, docking two crucial World Test Championship (WTC) points and issuing a 10 percent fine on player match fees.

England Penalized for Over-Rate Violation

The ICC confirmed the sanction on Tuesday, citing Article 16.11.2 of the WTC playing conditions, which states that teams will lose one WTC point for each over short of the required rate after considering allowances. England were found two overs short, resulting in the deduction of 2 WTC points, dropping their total from 24 to 22.

Additionally, under Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct, which governs minimum over-rate offences, players are fined 5% of their match fee per over short. As a result, the entire England squad was fined 10% of their earnings from the match.

Impact on the WTC Points Table

The penalty has had an immediate impact on the WTC standings. England’s percentage of points (PCT) dropped from 66.67% to 61.11%, causing them to slip from second to third place. Sri Lanka has now moved into second, while Australia continues to lead the table with a perfect record.

Latest ICC World Test Championship Standings:

Position Team Played Won Lost Drawn Deducted Points PCT (%)
1 Australia 3 3 0 0 0 36 100.00
2 Sri Lanka 2 1 0 1 0 16 66.67
3 England 3 2 1 0 2 22 61.11
4 India 3 1 2 0 0 12 33.33
5 Bangladesh 2 0 1 1 0 4 16.67
6 West Indies 3 0 3 0 0 0 0.00

A Familiar Setback for England

This isn’t the first time England has been penalized for time mismanagement. In the previous WTC cycle, the team lost 22 points due to similar over-rate violations—a reminder that discipline in every aspect of the game matters.

Victory Overshadowed by Penalty

While England pulled off a dramatic win on Day 5, the penalty has dulled some of the excitement. With challenging tours ahead, including a high-stakes Ashes series, England must focus on better time management, along with their bowling and fielding efforts, to stay in contention in the WTC race.
