Korangi Creek Fire Extinguished After 18 Days, Authorities Continue Environmental Assessment
Karachi – A fire that persisted for over two weeks in the Korangi Creek area has finally been extinguished, bringing an end to an 18-day-long emergency that captured national attention.
The blaze, which reportedly began on March 29 after a deep borehole drilling operation reaching approximately 1,200 feet, raised serious concerns about underground gas emissions believed to have sustained the fire for several days.
Although the visible flames have now been put out, emissions from the ground continue. Water used in the firefighting efforts is still erupting from the pit, accompanied by vapours and heat, indicating that the situation remains volatile.
Government and Experts Take Action
In response to the incident, the Ministry of Petroleum formed a dedicated committee to assess potential methane gas presence. Additionally, global emergency well-control experts from Cudd Well Control (USA) were consulted to support the investigation.
Technical teams from Pakistan Petroleum Limited (PPL) and United Energy Pakistan Limited (UEPL) conducted joint assessments at the site. They reported that the fire’s sustained intensity suggested the possibility of a notable underground gas reserve.
Due to ongoing water overflow and sand displacement, the crater at the site has expanded. Water samples collected from the area underwent chemical testing, which revealed the presence of certain industrial compounds.
While hydrocarbon levels remained within acceptable limits, preliminary findings showed higher-than-recommended levels of other substances. Experts highlighted the importance of continued environmental monitoring to ensure public safety and avoid long-term ecological impact.

Authorities are conducting further evaluations to determine the exact source of the emissions and the potential long-term risks. Precautionary measures are being taken to safeguard the surrounding community and ecosystem.
