Islamabad to Get Electric Tram Service

Islamabad Set to Launch State-of-the-Art Electric Tram and Bus System

In a major step towards improving urban mobility, a high-level meeting was recently held at the Capital Development Authority (CDA) Headquarters under the chairmanship of CDA Chairman and Chief Commissioner Islamabad, Muhammad Ali Randhawa. The agenda focused on introducing a modern, eco-friendly transport system for the Federal Capital.

Modern Transport Solutions on the Horizon

Chairman CDA emphasized that providing reliable, efficient, and sustainable public transport remains a top priority. Plans are now underway to launch electric tram buses across Islamabad. These advanced trams will feature multiple compartments to handle higher passenger volumes and will be designed with accessibility in mind—offering convenience for women, differently-abled individuals, and daily commuters alike.

Feasibility and Sustainable Planning

A comprehensive feasibility report is currently being prepared, covering financial, operational, and business models. The CDA Chairman stressed the need for a financially sustainable and self-supporting model, suggesting strong consideration of public-private partnerships (PPP).

Expanding the Electric Bus Network

Islamabad’s existing electric bus service is already seeing strong performance, with daily ridership surpassing 90,000. These buses are praised for being eco-friendly, cost-effective, and highly punctual, gaining widespread appreciation from residents.

Chairman Randhawa also announced plans for electric feeder buses, with routes to be selected based on detailed passenger data, ensuring high-impact coverage in densely populated areas.

Upgraded Infrastructure & Digital Integration

To support the growing network, over 140 bus stops are being upgraded, with an additional 200 new smart bus stops to be built. These will feature digital display boards showcasing schedules, safety messages, and advertisements for added revenue generation.

To further enhance passenger experience and boost revenue, the CDA is also introducing:

  • Smart ticketing systems

  • In-bus advertising solutions

  • Digital screens at terminals

  • Dedicated electric buses for CDA employees

Transforming Islamabad Into a Smart Capital

These initiatives mark a significant transformation in Islamabad’s urban transport landscape. With an emphasis on sustainability, technology, and accessibility, the CDA aims to make the city cleaner, smarter, and more commuter-friendly.

Chairman Randhawa expressed confidence in the project, calling on citizens to actively support this new vision for a modern Islamabad.
