Nolberto Solano Named Head Coach of Pakistan National Football Teams

KARACHI, July 22 – In a major development for Pakistani football, Nolberto Solano, former Newcastle United legend and assistant coach of Peru’s World Cup team, has been officially appointed as the head coach of Pakistan’s senior and U-23 national football teams.

The announcement marks the first significant appointment by the newly elected Pakistan Football Federation (PFF) leadership, as the country looks to reinvigorate its football program.

🌟 A Big Name for Pakistani Football

Solano, affectionately known as “Maestrito” (Little Master) by none other than Diego Maradona, brings a wealth of experience from both his playing and coaching careers. He played top-tier football in England and spent seven years as assistant coach of Peru’s national team, helping them qualify for the 2018 FIFA World Cup—their first appearance in 36 years.

“He will bring more zest and energy to the national team,” said PFF President Mohsen Gilani, expressing confidence that Solano will inject a dynamic style of play into the squad.

👔 Coaching Career So Far

While Solano’s recent stints with Swedish side AFC Eskilstuna and English club Blyth Spartans were less successful—he was sacked after just six games at Blyth—the Pakistan role offers a fresh start and a chance to rebuild his coaching reputation.

🏆 Upcoming Challenges

Solano’s immediate task will be leading the Pakistan U-23 team in the AFC U-23 Asian Cup qualifiers this September. Pakistan is placed in Group G alongside Cambodia, Iraq, and Oman.

Following that, he’ll take charge of the senior team’s campaign in the 2027 AFC Asian Cup qualifiers, with crucial matches against Afghanistan set for October.

🔄 Replacing Stephen Constantine

Solano replaces Stephen Constantine, the English coach who famously led Pakistan to its first-ever FIFA World Cup qualifying win in October 2023. Constantine’s contract ended last November, and he has since applied for the vacant head coach role of the Indian national team.

🇵🇰 A New Era for Pakistan Football?

The arrival of a globally recognized figure like Solano signals Pakistan’s ambition to take football development seriously. With youth tournaments and senior qualifiers on the horizon, the pressure is on—but the potential is high.

Stay tuned as Pakistan Football enters a new chapter under Nolberto Solano’s leadership.
