Punjab’s Prisons Face Severe Overcrowding as Inmate Population Surges
The prison system in Punjab, including the provincial capital Lahore, is experiencing significant overcrowding, with inmate populations exceeding official capacity by more than 70%, according to recent figures.
Current Situation
Punjab’s 45 prisons were originally designed to house around 37,500 inmates. However, the current number of prisoners has climbed to over 66,700, placing immense pressure on infrastructure and management.
Some of the most affected facilities include:
-
Camp Jail, Lahore
-
Capacity: 2,000 inmates
-
Current Population: Over 6,300
-
-
Kot Lakhpat Jail, Lahore
-
Capacity: 2,300 inmates
-
Current Population: More than 3,500
-
-
Adiala Jail, Rawalpindi
-
Capacity: 2,100 inmates
-
Current Population: Over 7,100
-
In contrast, only nine smaller prisons in the province are currently operating below full capacity.
Operational Challenges
The overcrowded conditions are particularly concerning during the hot and humid summer season. Inmates face severe discomfort in congested barracks, raising concerns about ventilation, hygiene, and overall living conditions.
Prison authorities have acknowledged that the rising inmate population is placing considerable strain on daily operations, including food supply, medical care, and security.
Need for Infrastructure Expansion
In response to ongoing overcrowding issues, proposals for the construction of a new prison in Lahore have been under discussion for several years. However, no significant progress has been made to date.
Officials emphasize the urgent need for infrastructure development and policy reforms to manage the growing number of prisoners and to improve prison conditions across the province.
