‘Indus Waters Treaty crucial for regional stability’

ISLAMABAD: Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar has highlighted the importance of the Indus Waters Treaty, calling its full implementation essential for maintaining regional peace and cooperation.

Speaking at a high-level strategy meeting on Monday, Mr. Dar reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to ensuring the treaty’s continued enforcement. The session was attended by Law Minister Azam Nazir Tarrar, Attorney General Mansoor Awan, senior officials, technical experts, and former foreign secretaries.

“The Indus Waters Treaty is a cornerstone of regional stability, and its integrity must be upheld,” said Mr. Dar, emphasizing the treaty’s long-standing role in water management between neighboring countries.

The meeting followed recent developments concerning India’s position on the treaty. Mr. Dar described the changes as a cause for concern and emphasized that Pakistan would take all appropriate steps through legal and diplomatic channels to protect its interests.

He further noted that the Indus River System is vital for Pakistan’s agriculture, economy, and the daily lives of over 240 million people. “Protecting our water resources is not just a strategic need but a humanitarian one,” he added.

Pakistan remains committed to upholding international agreements and will continue efforts to ensure sustainable and fair use of shared water resources for the benefit of all parties.
