Romero replaces Son as Spurs captain

Cristian Romero Named New Tottenham Captain Ahead of UEFA Super Cup

London: Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed Cristian β€œCuti” Romero as their new club captain following the departure of Son Heung-min.

Son, who led Spurs for the past two seasons and famously lifted the Europa League trophy in May, ended the club’s 17-year wait for silverware before joining LAFC earlier this month.

Romero, 27, had served as vice-captain for two years and even started the Europa League final win over Manchester United as skipper before Son came on in the second half. The Argentine defender will now officially lead Tottenham when they face Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Super Cup on Wednesday.

Tottenham’s new manager Thomas Frank praised Romero’s leadership qualities, saying:

β€œHe was very honoured and happy to take the armband. Leading this wonderful club is a big responsibility, not just for this Super Cup but for the entire season. He drives the team on the pitch and inspires them off it.”

Romero joined Spurs from Atalanta four years ago and was part of Argentina’s 2022 FIFA World Cup-winning squad. His appointment marks a new chapter for the North London club as they prepare for another competitive season.
