Lahore Set to Launch Electric Tram Service as Part of Eco-Friendly Transit Expansion
After successfully introducing electric buses, Lahore is now preparing to add electric trams to its public transport network. According to a spokesperson for the Orange Line Metro Train, the initiative is part of the city’s ongoing commitment to sustainable and environmentally friendly transportation.
Electric Trams Imported from China
The government has placed orders for modern electric trams from China, aiming to reduce the city’s carbon footprint and improve urban mobility. Each tram is designed to travel 25 to 27 kilometers on just 10 minutes of charging, making it an efficient and eco-conscious addition to Lahore’s infrastructure.
“These trams are currently being assembled at the Ali Town Depot,” the spokesperson revealed. The vehicles will feature a three-compartment design and can accommodate up to 250 passengers at a time.
Pilot Route Announced
The electric tram service will initially operate as a trial run, with the pilot route expected to cover the busy stretch from Thokar Niaz Baig to Harbanspura.
“At first, the tram service will be free of cost,”

Once the trial period concludes and operational success is assessed, ticketing will be introduced for regular public use.
Part of a Greener Future
This initiative comes alongside other eco-friendly transport projects, including electric buses and the recently tested trackless metro system. Together, these efforts reflect a broader urban strategy focused on reducing emissions and providing efficient alternatives to conventional fuel-based transport.
Conclusion:
Lahore’s shift toward sustainable public transportation is gaining momentum, and the launch of electric trams could mark another significant milestone in the city’s transit evolution. If the trial proves successful, it could pave the way for similar eco-initiatives in other cities across Pakistan.
