Sialkot Records Heaviest Rainfall in Nearly Five Decades

Sialkot Records Heaviest Rainfall in 49 Years, Flood Threat Intensifies

Sialkot experienced its most intense rainfall in nearly five decades, with 405 millimeters falling in just 24 hours, breaking the previous record of 339 millimeters set in 1976. The unprecedented downpour brought the city to a standstill, submerging roads, disrupting transport, and leaving thousands of residents stranded in waterlogged neighborhoods. Authorities urged people to stay indoors unless absolutely necessary.

Nearby, Gujrat district is also facing rising flood risks as water levels at the Head Marala Barrage approached maximum capacity. Inflows crossed 900,000 cusecs, putting dozens of surrounding villages on high alert. Evacuation plans are being prepared as a precautionary measure.

Heavy rains have also caused Bhimber Nullah to reach high flood levels after continuous showers in Kharian and nearby areas. Villages including Galyana, Do Do Barsala, Gujjar Kotla, Miana Chak, and Panjan Kasana have been warned to remain vigilant in case of sudden water surges.

In Sialkot, low-lying neighborhoods are severely flooded, forcing families to abandon their homes. Emergency services are working to reach affected areas, although submerged roads, power outages, and communication disruptions have complicated relief efforts. Authorities have deployed teams to provide food, shelter, and medical support to displaced residents.

District officials stressed the need for stronger flood-prevention infrastructure as more rainfall is expected in the coming days. Citizens have been urged to follow safety guidelines and cooperate fully with emergency measures to protect lives and property.
