The World Games 2025 Men’s Softball Day 2: Canada Dominates, Venezuela Edges Past Japan

Chengdu, China — August 7, 2025: After a rain-soaked morning and a three-and-a-half-hour delay, Day 2 of The World Games 2025 Men’s Softball tournament finally kicked off at the Xindu Better City Softball Arena. Despite the disrupted schedule, fans were treated to thrilling performances from top-ranked teams in action-packed encounters.

Canada vs Australia: Dominant Win for North Americans

Canada made a powerful statement in their tournament debut, defeating Australia 11-1.

Australia, looking to recover after a narrow loss to Singapore, struck first with Riley James driving in a run in the opening inning. But that early momentum quickly faded.

Canada roared back in the second inning, capitalizing on defensive errors and poor pitching to post a six-run inning. Key hits by Nick White, Brad Ezekiel, and Ty Sebastian forced an early pitching change for Australia, but the Canadian batters continued to pile on the runs. Blake Hunter and Jordan Pomeroy added back-to-back RBI singles to extend the lead, leaving Australia struggling to recover.

Canada’s performance solidified their position as strong contenders for the knockout stages.

Venezuela vs Japan: Clash of Giants Ends in Venezuela’s Favor

In one of the most anticipated matchups of the tournament, world No. 2 Venezuela outplayed top-ranked Japan, securing a 3-1 victory in a high-intensity clash.

Venezuela opened the scoring in the third inning with a powerful two-run homer by José Dorantes, following a defensive error that allowed Ángel Adames on base. Adames struck again in the fourth with an RBI single to make it 3-0.

Japan responded with a solo home run from Koki Sato, but it wasn’t enough to overcome Venezuela’s early dominance. Pitching from Eudomar Toyo helped Venezuela maintain their edge in a crucial win that boosts their chances for the semifinals.

Cricket West Indies Calls Emergency Meeting to Revive Test Cricket Legacy Cricket West Indies (CWI) has announced an emergency strategic intervention following a challenging Test series against Australia, aimed at revitalizing the team’s long-format performance. In response to the recent series defeat, CWI President Kishore Shallow has convened a special meeting of the Cricket Strategy and Officiating Committee. To provide expert insight and guidance, he has invited three of the region’s most celebrated cricket legends—Sir Clive Lloyd, Sir Vivian Richards, and Brian Lara—to join the discussions. These icons will collaborate with existing committee members Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Desmond Haynes, and Ian Bradshaw. “To strengthen the discussions, I have extended invitations to three of our greatest batsmen ever: Sir Clive Lloyd, Sir Vivian Richards, and Brian Lara,” Shallow said in a recent statement. Together, the trio brings decades of experience and nearly 28,000 Test runs. Their involvement is intended to offer both inspiration and practical solutions to help guide the next chapter of West Indies cricket. “This engagement is not ceremonial. These are men who helped define our golden eras,” Shallow explained. “Their perspectives will be invaluable as we shape the next phase of our cricket development. We intend for this gathering to result in tangible, actionable recommendations.” While the recent series outcome has prompted reflection within the cricketing community, CWI emphasized the importance of maintaining a forward-looking approach. The board remains committed to long-term planning and rebuilding a strong, competitive Test team. West Indies cricket has seen significant success in the T20 format, but the rise of shorter formats has presented challenges for the traditional Test arena. CWI hopes that renewed focus and expert input will help bridge this gap and encourage greater interest and preparation for red-ball cricket. The strategic meeting is expected to produce a roadmap focused on resilience, performance development, and fostering a renewed culture of excellence. With leadership from some of the game’s greatest Caribbean players, West Indies cricket aims to build a future rooted in its proud and storied legacy
