Arshad Nadeem Eyes Glory at World Athletics Championships in Tokyo

LAHORE: Pakistan’s Olympic javelin throw champion Arshad Nadeem is all set to represent the country at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo (Sept 13–21) and says he is aiming to give his very best on the global stage.

The 28-year-old, who made history by winning Olympic gold at Paris 2024 with a record-breaking throw of 92.97m, has been training at Punjab Stadium, Lahore, ahead of his departure to Tokyo via Bangkok. During his final practice session, Arshad consistently cleared throws above 85m, showing strong form and fitness.

“I always target my best performance in every competition. I am going to Tokyo with high hopes, the rest is in God’s hands,” Arshad told reporters.

Rivalry Talk with Neeraj Chopra

When asked about facing India’s Neeraj Chopra, Arshad dismissed the hype:

“My real competition is always with myself. I focus on Arshad Nadeem, not anyone else,” he said confidently.

The star athlete added that many of the same rivals from Paris will also be competing in Tokyo, making it an exciting contest. Arshad will compete in the qualifying round on Sept 17, with the final scheduled for Sept 18.

Comeback After Injury

Arshad had to miss two recent Diamond League events (Silesia and Zurich) due to fitness concerns, after winning gold at the Asian Athletics Championship in South Korea earlier this year with an 86.40m throw.

Last month, he underwent rehabilitation in England under the supervision of Dr. Ali Sher Bajwa. His medical team has now cleared him to compete.

“Arshad has fully recovered from his calf injury and passed all fitness tests. He is in top shape,” confirmed Dr. Asad Abbas Shah.

Olympic Scholarship Boost

In another positive development, Arshad received an Olympic scholarship from Pakistan Olympic Association (POA) President Arif Saeed, who personally visited Punjab Stadium.

  • Under the scholarship, Arshad will receive $1,125 per month for the next 36 months, supporting his journey toward the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

  • Six other athletes from shooting, table tennis, and taekwondo have also been awarded similar scholarships.

Expressing gratitude, Arshad said:

“I thank the nation and the POA for their support. With their prayers and this scholarship, I hope to raise Pakistan’s flag high again with another gold medal.”

Pakistan’s Golden Hope

With his sights set on Tokyo, Arshad Nadeem remains Pakistan’s brightest athletics star. After bringing Olympic glory to the nation, fans now eagerly await another historic performance as he steps onto the world stage once again.
