About 250 people, including Rohingya refugees and Bangladeshi nationals, are feared missing after a migrant boat capsized in the Andaman Sea, according to the United Nations refugee and migration agencies.
The vessel reportedly departed from Bangladesh and was heading towards Malaysia when it sank due to strong winds, rough seas, and overcrowding.
⚠️ Rescue Operation Underway
Officials said the exact time of the incident remains unclear. However, on April 9, a Bangladesh-flagged vessel rescued nine survivors who were found clinging to floating debris.
Survivors reported that the boat may have capsized during a storm between April 7 and 8, leaving passengers stranded at sea for nearly two days.
🌊 Dangerous Sea Journeys
Many Rohingya refugees continue to attempt dangerous sea crossings in search of safety and better living conditions. Most are fleeing long-standing displacement and difficult conditions in refugee camps.
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) said such journeys are often taken in overcrowded and unsafe boats with limited food, water, and sanitation.
🧭 Background of Migration Crisis
The Rohingya, a Muslim minority from Myanmar, have faced years of displacement following violence and persecution in their home region. Many currently live in refugee camps in Bangladesh.
Limited opportunities, poor living conditions, and ongoing uncertainty have pushed some refugees to attempt risky journeys toward countries like Malaysia, which they view as a safer destination.
🕊️ International Concerns
Humanitarian agencies have called for increased international support for refugees and host communities, emphasizing the need for long-term solutions to address displacement and improve living conditions.
