Iran, Israel trade fresh air attacks as Trump weighs US involvement

Tensions Escalate Between Iran and Israel Amid Ongoing Airstrikes

Heightened tensions between Iran and Israel continued on Thursday, with both nations engaging in a series of aerial exchanges. The development has drawn international attention, especially as former U.S. President Donald Trump remains non-committal on whether the United States will become directly involved.

Over the past week, Israel has conducted a wave of air and missile operations targeting key infrastructure and military assets in Iran, as part of an initiative it calls Operation Rising Lion. Israeli officials say the campaign is intended to deter Iran’s nuclear activities, which Tehran maintains are strictly for peaceful, civilian purposes.

Iran responded with its own strikes, which have affected several locations in Israel. The resulting situation has sparked concern about the potential for broader regional instability, especially as the conflict overlaps with ongoing hostilities in Gaza.

Speaking to reporters in Washington, Mr. Trump commented, “I may do it. I may not do it,” in reference to possible U.S. military action. He later mentioned that Iranian representatives had expressed interest in holding talks in Washington but questioned the timing, saying, “It’s a little late.”

Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, addressed the issue in a televised speech, emphasizing that any external intervention would have serious consequences. He reaffirmed Iran’s stance that it does not seek to develop nuclear weapons.

While the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) recently noted Iran had not met certain non-proliferation obligations, U.S. intelligence assessments reportedly conclude that Iran is not actively working toward nuclear weapons and remains years away from being able to produce one.

Israel, which has not signed the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), is widely believed to possess nuclear capabilities, though it has neither confirmed nor denied such claims.

In an effort to de-escalate tensions, European diplomats from Germany, France, and the United Kingdom are scheduled to meet with Iranian officials in Geneva this Friday to encourage a return to diplomatic dialogue.

As the situation evolves, many residents in Iran’s capital, Tehran, have opted to temporarily relocate from urban areas. One resident described leaving the city for safety after nearby buildings were impacted.

International organizations continue to monitor the humanitarian situation closely. While official figures vary, both sides have reported casualties and injuries. Efforts are underway to provide relief and ensure the protection of civilians in affected areas.

The international community is urging restraint and a return to diplomatic engagement to avoid further escalation.
