NDMA Issues Weather Alert: Heavy Monsoon Rains Expected Across Pakistan from July 13 to 17
The National Emergencies Operation Center (NEOC), operating under the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), has issued an important weather advisory ahead of moderate to heavy monsoon rains expected in several regions of Pakistan from Sunday, July 13 to Wednesday, July 17, 2025.
Impact-Based Weather Outlook Issued
According to the hydrological outlook released by NEOC, the upcoming spell is driven by intensified moisture inflow from both the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea, combined with an active westerly wave system. This weather system is expected to cause widespread rainfall across the country, with a significant impact on river flows and flood-prone areas.
Rivers & Barrages Likely to Experience Increased Water Levels
Heavy rain is likely to cause substantial rises in river flows, particularly in:
-
Indus River
-
Kabul River
-
Jhelum River (upstream of Mangla)
-
Chenab River
Here’s the current river and barrage status:
-
Low flood levels at: Tarbela, Taunsa, Guddu
-
Medium flood levels at: Kalabagh, Chashma
-
Taunsa is projected to rise to medium flood level.
-
Chenab at Marala and Khanki, and Kabul at Nowshera, are forecasted to reach low flood levels.
Additionally, rain-induced flooding is anticipated in River Swat, River Panjkora, and their tributaries.
Risk of Torrential Flows & Flash Flooding
Torrents in D.G. Khan and Rajanpur may re-activate, producing medium to high flows. In Balochistan, streams and nullahs in northeastern districts such as Jhal Magsi, Kachhi, Sibi, Qila Saifullah, Zhob, and Musakhel may experience high flows, while southern Balochistan districts including Khuzdar, Awaran, Lasbela, and Qalat face risk of localized flash flooding.
Current dam levels:
-
Tarbela Dam: 74% capacity
-
Mangla Dam: 44% capacity
Public Safety and Preparedness Advisory
NDMA urges all residents, especially those living near rivers, streams, and low-lying areas, to take the following precautionary steps:
-
Stay alert for water surges, especially during night-time rainfall.
-
Identify safe evacuation routes in advance.
-
Secure belongings, vehicles, and livestock in elevated areas.
-
Prepare emergency kits with food, water, medications, and other essentials for at least 3 to 5 days.
-
District administrations, especially in northeastern and central Punjab, should ready dewatering equipment to manage possible urban flooding.
