Shah Rukh Khan Wins First National Film Award After 30 Years in Cinema
In a historic and long-awaited moment, Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan has clinched his first-ever National Film Award for Best Actor, a landmark recognition in his illustrious 30-year career. The honour was awarded jointly to Vikrant Massey for his outstanding performance in 12th Fail at the 71st National Film Awards.
The National Film Awards, established in 1954, are among the most prestigious accolades in Indian cinema. The Best Actor category, introduced in 1967, has celebrated generations of talent—and Khan’s name finally joins the elite list.
Double Role in Jawan Earns Khan Top Honour
Khan was recognized for his powerful dual portrayal in the 2023 blockbuster Jawan, directed by Atlee. He played both a battle-hardened army veteran and his idealistic son—roles that struck a chord with audiences and critics alike. The film became one of the highest-grossing Indian films of all time.
Vikrant Massey, on the other hand, won for 12th Fail, a film that also bagged the Best Feature Film award. Rani Mukerji took home the Best Actress honour, completing a standout year for Indian cinema.
A Humble Reaction from the King of Bollywood
Currently recovering from an on-set injury, Shah Rukh Khan addressed fans via Instagram, his right arm in a sling. In an emotional video message, he said, “I am overwhelmed with gratitude, pride, and humility. A National Award is not just an achievement—it’s a reminder that what I do matters.”
Khan thanked the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, the National Film Awards jury, and directors Rajkumar Hirani (Dunki), Siddharth Anand (Pathaan), and especially Atlee, whose mass-appeal storytelling defined Jawan.
“Atlee sir, this is—like you say—mass,” Khan smiled, referencing the film’s high-energy, socially charged narrative.
A Message of Thanks and a Promise to Return
Khan also expressed gratitude to his family, team, and fans: “To my management, thank you for bearing with my quirks. To my wife and kids—thank you for letting me chase this dream. And to my audience, thank you for all the cheers and all the tears.”
He ended his message with a heartfelt promise: “I’ll be back on screen soon.”
