Weather Department Predicts Extremely Heavy Monsoon Rains| This Week

Monsoon Alert: Widespread Rain and Flood Risks Expected Across Pakistan from July 14–17

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a weather advisory as a low-pressure system currently over northwest Madhya Pradesh (India) is expected to affect various parts of Pakistan over the next 24 to 72 hours.

This weather system is likely to bring strong monsoon currents to central and upper regions of the country. A westerly wave is also present over the northern areas, further intensifying rainfall activity.

Expected Weather Conditions by Region

Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan

  • Rain, wind, and thunderstorms with heavy to very heavy rainfall are expected in Neelum Valley, Muzaffarabad, Rawalakot, Poonch, and nearby areas from July 14 (night) to July 17.

  • In Gilgit-Baltistan, moderate to heavy rainfall is expected in Diamir, Skardu, Hunza, Gilgit, and Astore, with breaks in between.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP)

  • Areas including Swat, Chitral, Dir, Kohistan, Peshawar, Mansehra, Abbottabad, and others are forecast to receive rain-wind/thundershowers with scattered heavy to extremely heavy rainfall from July 14 (night) to July 17.

Punjab and Islamabad

  • Cities such as Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Lahore, Gujranwala, Sialkot, Faisalabad, Multan, and D.G. Khan will experience rain, thunderstorms, and heavy to very heavy showers, especially in low-lying areas, between July 14 (evening) and July 17.

Balochistan

  • Quetta, Zhob, Loralai, Lasbela, Barkhan, Dera Bugti, and surrounding districts are likely to experience scattered rainfall with occasional heavy showers from July 14 to July 16.

Sindh

  • Moderate rainfall is expected in Tharparkar, Mirpur Khas, Sukkur, Larkana, Dadu, and Khairpur from July 14 to July 16. Karachi may receive light showers during this period.


Possible Impacts & Public Advisory

  • Flash flooding is possible in streams and nullahs of northern KP, Murree, Galliyat, Islamabad/Rawalpindi, Kashmir, and parts of Balochistan.

  • Urban flooding may affect low-lying areas of Islamabad, Lahore, Gujranwala, Sialkot, Multan, and Faisalabad.

  • Landslides/mudslides may disrupt traffic in hilly regions including Murree, Galliyat, KP, Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan.

  • Strong winds and lightning may damage electric poles, billboards, solar panels, and weaker structures.

  • Agricultural damage is possible to standing crops in parts of Punjab, KP, and Kashmir due to excessive rain.

Safety Measures Recommended

The Met Office advises citizens to:

  • Stay updated via official weather alerts.

  • Avoid unnecessary travel to flood-prone or hilly areas during the forecast period.

  • Secure loose outdoor items and structures.

  • Farmers are urged to take necessary precautions to protect crops and livestock.
