Manchester United Loss Rises to £43 Million Despite Record Revenue

London: Manchester United has reported a net loss of £43 million ($57 million) for the financial year ending June 30, 2026, marking an increase of almost one-third despite the club achieving record annual revenue.

The Premier League club generated £677.6 million in revenue during the year, representing a 1.7% increase compared with the previous financial period.

However, United recorded its seventh consecutive annual loss after tax, with several significant expenses affecting its financial performance.

Broadcasting Income Increases

The club’s broadcasting revenue rose by almost 20%, helped by Manchester United’s improved Premier League position.

United finished third in the league during the 2025/26 campaign, a significant improvement from their 15th-place finish the previous season.

However, commercial and matchday revenues both declined by nearly 5%, partly because the club did not participate in European competitions during the season.

Cost-Cutting Measures Continue

Co-owner Jim Ratcliffe has introduced a wide-ranging cost-reduction programme since acquiring a stake in Manchester United in February 2024.

The measures have included substantial reductions in staffing and operating expenses.

Despite these savings, the club’s accounts showed £8.2 million in exceptional costs, with much of the amount linked to the departure of former manager Ruben Amorim in January.

United also faced a substantial rise in loan repayments during the reporting period.

Land Purchased for New Stadium Project

Manchester United spent £63.5 million acquiring land next to the existing Old Trafford site.

The property is intended to form part of plans for a proposed 100,000-capacity stadium, which would replace or complement the club’s current home as part of its long-term redevelopment plans.

Club Expects Higher Revenue

Chief executive Omar Berrada said the financial results reflected the club’s ongoing efforts to improve its underlying finances.

He also said United would continue to focus on financial discipline and long-term sustainability.

For the current financial year, Manchester United expects revenue to reach between £740 million and £760 million.

Difficult Start to New Season

On the field, United have experienced a difficult beginning to the 2026/27 season.

The team has collected just five points from its opening five Premier League matches, matching the club’s worst-ever start to a league campaign.
