Fatima Sana Leads Pakistan to Asian Games Bronze With Outstanding All-Round Performance

Pakistan’s women’s cricket team secured a bronze medal at the Asian Games in Japan after defeating Bangladesh, with captain Fatima Sana once again playing a key role with both bat and ball.
The victory gave Pakistan its first women’s cricket medal at the Asian Games since the gold medal won in 2014. The result also provided some relief after Pakistan’s defeat to Sri Lanka in the semi-final.
Fatima Sana has emerged as one of Pakistan’s most important players in 2026, producing consistent performances while also handling the responsibility of leading the national side.
Fatima Sana’s impressive 2026 numbers
Fatima has been Pakistan’s leading run-scorer in women’s T20 internationals this year, accumulating 540 runs at an average of 45 and a strike rate close to 150.
She has also hit more sixes than any other Pakistan player during the year.
Her performances have been particularly effective when Pakistan have won. In those victories, she has maintained a batting average of 55.8.
Her contribution with the ball has been equally significant. Fatima has taken 31 wickets in 21 matches in 2026, making her Pakistan’s leading wicket-taker for the year.
From bowling all-rounder to key batter
Fatima initially established herself primarily as a bowling all-rounder, but her batting has developed significantly over the past few years.
Her current performances have made her valuable in both departments, giving Pakistan an important player who can influence matches with either discipline.
She made her international debut against South Africa in Potchefstroom in 2019. Two years later, she became the first Pakistani woman to receive the ICC Emerging Cricketer of the Year award.
In August 2024, she was appointed Pakistan’s permanent captain.
Performing under pressure
Fatima has repeatedly produced important performances when Pakistan have been in difficult situations.
During an ODI against New Zealand in 2023, she came to the crease with Pakistan four wickets down for just 35 runs. She responded with an unbeaten 90 and helped rebuild the innings, although Pakistan eventually lost the match by one wicket.
At the 2024 T20 World Cup, she made an immediate impact as captain against Sri Lanka, scoring 30 from 20 balls and taking the wicket of Chamari Athapaththu as Pakistan recorded a 31-run victory.
In May 2025, she also made history by scoring a 15-ball half-century against Zimbabwe, setting a record for the fastest fifty in women’s T20 internationals at the time.
Pakistan have other promising players
Although Fatima Sana has been central to Pakistan’s recent performances, the team has several other players capable of making an impact.
Sadia Iqbal and Nashra Sandhu have been among Pakistan’s leading bowling options, while Muneeba Ali has remained an important part of the batting unit.
A number of young players are also emerging through Pakistan’s domestic and age-group cricket structure, including Shawaal Zulfiqar and Aroob Shah.
Bronze medal offers encouragement
The Asian Games bronze medal is an encouraging result for Pakistan’s women’s cricket team after a series of close contests and disappointing results.
Fatima Sana’s performances have provided the team with a strong all-round option, but long-term success will require contributions from the entire squad across batting, bowling and fielding.
For now, the bronze medal gives Pakistan women’s cricket a positive result to build on, while Fatima’s form and leadership remain among the major talking points heading into the team’s upcoming international assignments.
