India Breaks Records with Historic Run Rate in Test Cricket Victory Over Bangladesh
India made history during the second Test against Bangladesh in Kanpur on Tuesday, setting a record-breaking run rate of 7.36—the highest ever in Test cricket. This remarkable feat surpassed South Africa’s previous record of 6.80, achieved against Zimbabwe in Cape Town back in 2005.
India secured a seven-wicket win in a rain-affected match that saw two-and-a-half days lost to poor weather. Despite the delays, India dominated the series, completing a 2-0 sweep and extending their record with their 18th consecutive Test series victory on home soil.
India’s impressive run continued from their first Test victory, a 280-run win in Chennai. In Kanpur, they bundled out Bangladesh for 146 on the fifth and final day and chased down the target of 95 runs, finishing at 98-3 in just 104 balls. This win solidified their standing at the top of the World Test Championship rankings, ahead of Australia.
India’s batting performance was a masterclass, setting new records for the fastest team 50, 100, and 200 in a single innings. Scoring at a rapid rate of 8.22 runs per over, India posted a total of 285 runs, gaining a 52-run lead over Bangladesh, according to the ICC.
Yashasvi Jaiswal was the standout player, delivering a stunning performance that earned him the “Player of the Match” title. He scored 72 runs in the first innings and reached his second 50 of the match in just 43 balls in the second innings. The 22-year-old opener also broke Sunil Gavaskar’s record for most runs by an Indian under 23, amassing 929 runs in 2024—surpassing Gavaskar’s 918 runs scored in 1971.
In the second innings, Jaiswal’s partnership with Virat Kohli produced a 58-run stand before Jaiswal was dismissed by Taijul Islam. Former captain Kohli contributed 29 runs and remained not out as Rishabh Pant hit the winning boundary.
Bangladesh’s second innings crumbled after resuming on 26-2 on the final day, with Shadman Islam top-scoring with 50 runs. India’s bowlers, including Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, and Jasprit Bumrah, each took three wickets, dismantling Bangladesh’s batting lineup.
Bangladesh were all out for 233 in their first innings and India responded with their rapid 285-9 from just 34.4 overs. The victory not only broke records but also set the stage for the upcoming three-match T20 series, which begins Sunday in Gwalior.
India’s dominance in the Test arena continues, and this latest victory highlights their exceptional form, both with the bat and ball, as they look to carry their momentum into the T20 series.
