French Astronaut Says Earth Has ‘No Divisions, No Borders’ After 235 Days in Space
French astronaut Sophie Adenot has described Earth as a shared and precious planet without visible divisions or borders after returning from an eight-month mission aboard the International Space Station (ISS).
Adenot made the remarks on Saturday in Cologne, Germany, following her return to Earth after spending 235 days in space. Her mission set a record for the longest uninterrupted stay in orbit by a European astronaut.
The 44-year-old astronaut returned on Thursday aboard a Dragon capsule carrying the Crew-12 team, which splashed down in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of California.
Speaking at the European Space Agency’s training centre in Cologne, Adenot reflected on the experience of viewing Earth from approximately 400 kilometres above its surface.
From space, she said, the planet appeared without divisions or borders, offering a powerful reminder that humanity shares one precious world.
Adenot said her time in space had exposed her to a wide range of human emotions, from moments of great joy to some of the most difficult experiences of her life.
Her return to Germany was emotional, and she occasionally became tearful while speaking to reporters. She also appeared physically weakened and was assisted by two European Space Agency physicians upon arrival.
Extended periods in microgravity can affect the human body in several ways, including bone loss, muscle weakening, changes in cardiovascular fitness and vision-related problems.
Adenot is expected to undergo an intensive recovery programme lasting approximately three weeks to help her regain her pre-flight physical condition.
Describing the experience of returning home, she said it brought a mixture of extraordinary emotions, happiness and physiological challenges.
She also recalled the difficult journey back to Earth on Thursday, explaining that the capsule carrying the four returning astronauts encountered heavy waves for around 25 minutes during its splashdown.
Despite the physical challenges of readjusting to life on Earth, Adenot’s reflections highlighted how viewing the planet from space can offer a different perspective on humanity, national borders and the importance of the world people share.
