LA 2028 Men’s Volleyball: Six Teams Secure Olympic Qualification

The qualification process for the men’s volleyball competition at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games has started to take shape, with six teams already securing their places in the tournament.
The United States have a guaranteed spot as the host nation, while Brazil, Cuba, Japan, Tunisia and Poland have earned qualification through the continental process.
A total of 12 teams will compete in the men’s volleyball competition at the 2028 Olympics. The remaining places will be decided through the next stages of the qualification process.
United States
The United States have automatically qualified for the Los Angeles Olympics as hosts.
The 2028 Games will mark the third occasion on which the country has hosted Olympic volleyball competitions, following Los Angeles 1984 and Atlanta 1996.
The American men’s team is set to make its 12th consecutive Olympic appearance and 14th overall. The USA won the bronze medal at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
The team has three Olympic gold medals, won in 1984, 1988 and 2008, along with three bronze medals.
Japan
Japan secured its Olympic place after successfully defending its AVC Men’s Volleyball Asian Championship title on home soil in Fukuoka.
The Japanese team will make its third consecutive Olympic appearance and 11th overall at the Games.
Japan hosted the first Olympic volleyball competition in Tokyo in 1964, where the men’s team won bronze. It later claimed silver at Mexico City 1968 and gold at Munich 1972.
Cuba
Cuba also booked its place in Los Angeles after winning the NORCECA Men’s Volleyball Continental Olympic Qualifier in Moncton, Canada.
The qualification ends a 12-year absence from the Olympic men’s volleyball competition for Cuba.
Cuba have previously appeared at the Olympics seven times, with their best result coming at Montreal 1976, where they won the bronze medal.
Brazil, Tunisia and Poland
Brazil, Tunisia and Poland have also secured qualification through their respective continental events.
Their inclusion takes the number of confirmed teams for the LA 2028 men’s volleyball tournament to six, with six Olympic places still to be filled.
The remaining qualification opportunities will determine the final teams heading to Los Angeles for the Olympic volleyball competition in 2028.
