Liverpool produced an impressive comeback to defeat Villarreal 4-3 on Tuesday, recovering from a two-goal deficit to record their third consecutive victory in the UEFA Champions League.
Alexis Mac Allister scored twice as Liverpool overturned an early setback at Anfield, while substitute Florian Wirtz also found the net to help the Reds collect nine points from their opening three matches. The result kept Liverpool alongside Paris Saint-Germain near the top of the Champions League standings.
Villarreal made a strong start and took the lead in the fourth minute after Georges Mikautadze capitalised on a defensive error by Virgil van Dijk. The visitors doubled their advantage before the half-hour mark when Sergi Cardona finished a well-worked attacking move.
Liverpool struggled to contain Villarreal during the opening stages, but Mac Allister sparked the home side’s recovery with a header from a Kostas Tsimikas corner nine minutes before half-time.
The comeback gathered momentum when Rio Ngumoha delivered a cross that Cardona failed to clear. Ronald Araujo took advantage of the defensive lapse to head home the equaliser in first-half stoppage time.
Liverpool returned from the break with greater attacking intent and took the lead in the 65th minute. Ngumoha used his pace to break down the right flank before delivering a low cross that Mac Allister converted with a powerful finish.
Just three minutes later, Wirtz extended Liverpool’s advantage after receiving a pass from Cody Gakpo. The goal was an important moment for the German midfielder as he continued his search for consistency in front of goal.
Villarreal refused to surrender and reduced the deficit when Tani Oluwaseyi connected with a cross from Ayoze Perez, setting up a tense finish. Liverpool, however, held on to secure the points.
Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola praised his players’ response to the difficult opening period but warned that the team could not afford to lose concentration during matches.
He acknowledged that Villarreal had been the stronger side during the first part of the game, while Liverpool improved significantly after the interval. Iraola also pointed to moments when his team appeared to relax after taking control, allowing the visitors to threaten again.
The manager had made changes to his attacking line-up, with Alexander Isak, Bradley Barcola and Wirtz among the players initially left on the bench as Liverpool prepared for their upcoming Premier League fixture against Brighton.
Villarreal coach Inigo Perez saw his team create several opportunities, particularly in the first half, but defensive mistakes ultimately proved costly.
Ngumoha’s performance attracted particular praise from Mac Allister, who highlighted the young winger’s influence on Liverpool’s comeback. The teenager supplied the crosses that led to the equaliser and the decisive third goal.
The victory strengthened Liverpool’s position in the Champions League league phase, while Villarreal were left with three points from their first three matches. Liverpool will look to maintain their momentum as the competition progresses and the race for qualification to the knockout rounds intensifies.
