Commonwealth Games 2026: Australia’s Kai Taylor Wins 200m Freestyle Gold in Glasgow

Australia’s Kai Taylor delivered a standout performance to win the men’s 200m freestyle gold medal at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow on Wednesday.
Swimming from lane one, Taylor led the race from start to finish and touched the wall first in 1:45.22, securing the Commonwealth title with an impressive display.
James Guy and Matt Richards Share Silver
The battle for second place ended in a rare tie, with England’s James Guy and Wales’ Matt Richards both finishing in 1:45.72. As a result, the two swimmers shared the silver medal, and no bronze medal was awarded.
Speaking after the race, Taylor said he was confident despite starting from an outside lane.
“If you’ve got a lane, you’ve got a chance. I backed my training and gave everything I had,” he said.

Taylor entered the final as the seventh-fastest qualifier, but quickly took control of the race. He reached the halfway mark in first place and maintained his lead to claim the gold medal.
Fellow Australians Harrison Turner and Sam Short finished just outside the medals in fourth and fifth place, respectively.
The victory marks another swimming gold for Australia as the nation continues its strong campaign at the 2026 Commonwealth Games.
