Olympic Champion Laura Dahlmeier Tragically Passes Away During Climb on Laila Peak
The world of sports and mountaineering is in mourning following the tragic death of Laura Dahlmeier, a legendary biathlete and Olympic gold medalist. The 31-year-old lost her life after a rockfall struck during an expedition on Laila Peak, one of Pakistan’s most iconic summits located in the Gilgit-Baltistan region.
According to the Alpine Club of Pakistan (ACP), the accident occurred on Monday, July 28, at around 5,700 metres altitude in the remote Hushe Valley, near Gondogoro Glacier. Dahlmeier was climbing with her expedition partner, Marina Eva, when a sudden rockfall struck. While Marina Eva survived and safely made her way back to base camp, Dahlmeier succumbed to her injuries.

Local officials confirmed that rescue teams were dispatched quickly. Faizullah Faraq, spokesperson for the Gilgit-Baltistan government, said that rescue operations faced challenges due to difficult weather and terrain. Pakistan Army Aviation helicopters assisted in the effort, and a government helicopter is expected to retrieve her remains once weather conditions allow.
