Pakistan hockey captain Abu Bakar Mahmood and national team forward Ahmad Nadeem are preparing to represent overseas clubs, with Abu Bakar heading to Australia and Nadeem set to play in France.

Abu Bakar will feature for Melbourne Cobras in Australia’s Hockey One League, where he is expected to participate in seven matches beginning in mid-October.

The Melbourne Cobras are making their debut in the competition this season after becoming the league’s eighth franchise. Abu Bakar’s participation will provide him with an opportunity to gain valuable experience in a competitive international club environment.

The Pakistan captain is known for his defensive skills and drag-flicking ability. He began his international career with Pakistan’s under-21 team in 2014 before making his senior debut in 2017.

Abu Bakar was appointed captain of the national team ahead of the 2026 FIH Hockey World Cup and also led Pakistan at the Asian Games in Japan.

Ahmad Nadeem to Play in French Hockey League

Meanwhile, Pakistan international Ahmad Nadeem is set to represent Hockey Club de Nantes in France. The forward is expected to play six matches over the next six weeks.

Nadeem already has experience in French club hockey, having previously represented Douai and Lambersart before joining Nantes in 2025.

He returned to the Nantes side in March 2026 after completing international commitments. Pakistan defender Sufyan Khan also joined him at the club.

The forward has represented Pakistan in several major international competitions, including the FIH Pro League, Asian Champions Trophy and the 2026 FIH Hockey World Cup.

Nadeem has previously spoken positively about his experience playing in France, explaining that competing alongside players from different countries has helped him improve his skills and better understand European hockey.

Overseas Experience Could Benefit Pakistan Hockey

The participation of Abu Bakar Mahmood and Ahmad Nadeem in overseas leagues offers both players an opportunity to develop their skills through regular competition against international opponents.

Their experience in Australia and France could also prove valuable for Pakistan’s national team as it continues to compete in major international hockey tournaments.

Both players are expected to continue their club commitments abroad while remaining part of Pakistan’s national hockey setup.
