Newcastle Red Bulls Sign Super Rugby Star Tom Christie on Two-Year Deal

Newcastle Red Bulls have made a major addition to their squad ahead of the new season, securing the signature of three-time Super Rugby winner Tom Christie. The 27-year-old flanker will join the club in the autumn on a two-year contract.

Christie, a former New Zealand Under-20s captain and Junior World Cup winner, has been a key figure for the Crusaders during a dominant period in which they lifted three Super Rugby Pacific titles in the past four years. Known for his relentless work rate and defensive strength, he is expected to bring both experience and energy to the Red Bulls’ pack.

The signing comes shortly after the club confirmed its takeover by global brand Red Bull, marking the start of a new era for Newcastle.

Head coach Steve Diamond described Christie’s arrival as a statement of intent:

“Tom has been a key man for one of the best teams in world rugby. His signing shows our ambition and will significantly strengthen our squad. He’s at a great stage of his career, in excellent shape, and a player who does the basics brilliantly. I’m looking forward to working with him.”

Christie also expressed his excitement about the move:

“I’m thrilled to be joining Newcastle, a club with a proud history and passionate supporters. With the vision and backing from the new investors, I believe we can achieve great things. After speaking with Steve, it was clear this is where I want to be, and I can’t wait to get started.”

With Christie’s signing, Newcastle fans can look forward to seeing one of New Zealand’s most consistent performers take to the pitch as the club builds towards an ambitious future.
