London Spirit Hold Off Trent Rockets to Claim Second Win in The Hundred

London, August 14, 2025London Spirit secured a thrilling 21-run victory over Trent Rockets under lights at Lord’s, keeping the Men’s Hundred 2025 competition wide open.

The win moves London Spirit into a five-way tie at the top of the points table, while the Rockets’ bid for a third consecutive successful run-chase was halted.

The match was finely poised at the halfway mark of the Rockets’ chase. Openers Tom Banton and Joe Root put together a 69-run partnership, with Banton smashing a towering 89-metre six off Dan Worrall. However, when Jamie Overton dismissed Banton in a bizarre fashion, and Worrall followed up by removing David Willey and Rehan Ahmed in quick succession, the momentum shifted decisively in Spirit’s favor. Root fell shortly after, leaving Rockets four wickets down in just 14 balls.

Despite a late surge from Marcus Stoinis, the chase fell short as Spirit’s pace attack – Overton, Worrall, Luke Wood, and Richard Gleeson (who bowled the tournament’s fastest delivery at 94.1mph) – executed a brilliant performance.

With the bat, Jamie Smith starred for London Spirit, promoted to opener and reaching his half-century in 32 balls, combining with Kane Williamson for a 73-run partnership. Ashton Turner then added a quickfire 30 off 16 balls to finish the innings at 162/5.

Smith, named Meerkat Match Hero, praised the team’s performance:
“Our seamers controlled the game, and we kept taking wickets at crucial times. Getting runs on a new ground and building partnerships with Kane and the team sets us up nicely for the coming games.”
