August 23, 2025

The Punjab government has unveiled plans to set up six state-of-the-art Aqua Business Hubs aimed at strengthening the fisheries sector and enhancing food security across the province.

In the first phase, the hubs will be established in Rawalpindi, Wazirabad, Sargodha, Lahore, Sheikhupura, and Khanewal. Each facility will be developed over two years at an estimated cost of Rs. 5 billion.

According to officials, these hubs will be equipped with modern fish hatcheries, feed supply chains, processing plants, cold storage facilities, value addition units, research laboratories, and training centers. The initiative is expected to introduce advanced technologies to the fisheries industry, provide farmers with resources and training, and create new employment opportunities.

Directed by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, the project has been included in the provincial development budget to ensure timely execution. The hubs are expected to support the successful farming of more than 16 fish species suited to Punjab’s climate and resources.

This initiative reflects the provincial government’s broader vision to promote sustainable agriculture, strengthen food supply chains, and support rural livelihoods.
