Pakistan Reportedly Accepts FIH Pro League Invite

Pakistan Men’s Hockey Set to Join FIH Pro League 2025–26 After Financial Boost

After weeks of uncertainty, Pakistan hockey has received a major boost, with reports indicating that the men’s team will now compete in the FIH Pro League 2025–26.

Local journalist Arfa Feroze Zaki reported that the breakthrough came after the Finance Ministry pledged Rs25 crore, while sponsors contributed an additional Rs10 crore, clearing the immediate financial hurdles that had threatened Pakistan’s participation.

Pakistan’s entry had been uncertain, with the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) struggling to raise funds following New Zealand’s withdrawal and an invitation from the International Hockey Federation (FIH). The PHF had requested Rs70.3 crore from the Pakistan Sports Board, which delayed approval due to questions over past spending.

This development ensures that Pakistan will avoid another embarrassment, similar to when the country withdrew from the inaugural Pro League, incurring a €170,000 fine. The Pro League runs from November 2025 to June 2026 and will see Pakistan face top teams including Argentina, Australia, Belgium, England, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain, and India.

Once four-time world champions and three-time Olympic gold medalists, Pakistan remains Asia’s most successful hockey team with eight Asian Games golds and three Champions Trophy titles. However, administrative challenges and financial instability have weakened the sport domestically.

This funding package not only secures Pakistan’s participation but also offers a chance to revive the sport nationally. While confirmation from the FIH and PHF is still awaited, experts say that structural reforms will be key to restoring Pakistan hockey to its former glory.
